Decision-making is a vital aspect of modern day management. This can be a primary function of supervision. A manager's major job is sound/rational decision-making. This individual takes numerous decisions consciously and subconsciously. Decision-making is vital part of manager's activities. Decisions are important as they determine the two managerial and organizational actions. A decision can be defined as " a course of action which can be consciously chosen from amongst a set of alternatives to achieve a desired end result. " It represents a well-balanced wisdom and a commitment to action 2 . Definitions of Decision-making
1 ) The Oxford Dictionary defines the term decision-making as " the actions of carrying out or transporting into effect". 2 . Relating to Trewatha & Newport cigarettes, " Decision-making involves the selection of a course of action by among several possible alternatives in order to reach a solution to get a given problem". 5. Steps Involved In Making decisions Process
Decision-making involves a number of steps which need to be ingested in a logical method. This is cured as a logical or medical 'decision-making process' which is extended and time-consuming. Such lengthy process needs to be followed to be able to take rational/scientific/result oriented decisions. Decision-making method prescribes a few rules and guidelines regarding how a decision should be taken / made. This involves a large number of steps realistically arranged. It had been Peter Drucker who initially strongly advocated the technological method of decision-making in his world renowned book 'The Practice of Management' posted in 1955. Drucker recommended the technological method of decision-making which, relating to him, involves the following six methods: 1 . Understanding / Identifying the managerial problem,
2 . Analyzing the problem,
3. Growing alternative alternatives,
4. Choosing the right solution from the available alternatives, 5. Switching the decision in to action, and
6. Making sure feedback to get follow-up.
