 Refugee Blues Essay

Auden's ‘Refugee Blues' laments the plight from the Jews who had been forced to run away Europe when the Holocaust started and they were rounded up and killed or imprisoned under the cruel regime of Hitler. The poem starts with a narrator, who may be later revealed to be a A language like german Jew, describing a large town which is home to eight million people some of which are well off and stay in luxurious huge houses although some make do in slums and shabby properties. Yet, the narrator tells the person with him, most probably a woman, that there is no place for these people there. This individual remembers that they once a new country in the past, speaking of Middle east, and they believed the world of it. But now their own country is so distant to them that to see it they have to flick through an atlas and this individual knows that they can't go there possibly. The narrator then remarks on how just about every spring the flowers develop anew for the old forest that develops in the village churchyard, and mourns to his friend that old passports can't renew themselves, knowing how how the nation where they wanted to proceed had refused them saying that they were as good as dead in the event they don't have current passports. It appears that it is all their misfortune that they will be still among the living, looking at his dejected tone as he addresses his companion. He remembers just how when he had gone to the people who had been made in charge of providing the war asylum seekers homes, they had been well mannered to him, yet hadn't been able to help him, having their hands tied because of the politics together told him to return the coming year. Recalling a public getting together with that he had attended, this individual remembers that the person got accused these people of trying to steal apart the sustenance of the occupants of the town by barging in, and informs his companion that that guy had been talking of them. He thinks that he observed the rumbling of an imminent storm, however it turned out to be Hitler sentencing them all to death.
